Section A Question 1(Compulsory)

Answer the following question.
This question is about the growing influence of the East India Company.
1 Study the sources (Insert) carefully and then answer the questions which follow.

(a) According to Source A what were the personal characteristics of Robert Clive? [3]

(b) What can we learn from Source B about the treatment of Indian hostages during the Mysore Wars? [5]

(c) Explain why the East India Company was interested in the subcontinent in the years before 1750. [7]

(d) To what extent were economic reforms the main cause of the War of Independence in 1857? Explain your answer. [10]

SOURCE A


"There are few figures in history as controversial as Robert Clive. Some people described him as a 
soldier of initiative, courage and determination. Other people saw him as reckless and unprincipled, a 
rebel expelled from several schools for bad behaviour. They said his victories at Arcot, Calcutta and Plassey were all the result of lucky gambles that put his men in unnecessary danger. It was also said that Clive used tactics that were sly and against the accepted codes of battle. Clive was also described as cruel, lacking in morality and greedy for personal wealth".

Ans (a) Hints:
Attempting a parts of the compulsory question requires comprehension of the given text in the form of three points of information which are relevant to the given text. Even some specific words from the text can also be picked up to relate to the given information.

(c) Explain why the East India Company was interested in the subcontinent in the years before 1750. [7]

Ans (c) Hints:
- Came for trade and earned large profits
- Interested to increase their political influence
- wanted to oust other compititive trading companies like French, Dutch, portugees
extent were economic reforms the main cause of the War of Independence in 1857? Explain your answer. [10]

Ans (d) Hints: 
- Increased taxes on Indians
- very low salaries of EIC spoys and no promotion
- Interest based loans of EIC 
- Confescation of lands in the conqured areas

(b) Explain why Benazir Bhutto’s government ended in 1996. [7]

(c) Was the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) the main reason of end of Nawaz Sharif rule in 1993? 14

Q3 is sometimes from Section 2 and sometimes from Section 1
Q 4 is sometimes from Section 2 & sometimes from section 3
 Q 5 is mostly from section 3 and international relations are focused in it

each of the above questions have three three parts when any of these question is opted students are supposed to attempt it's all parts. Following are the parts of questions:
a) 4 marks
b) 7 marks
c) 14 marks
in total its makes 25 marks


Attempting four Marks Questions 

These are the a) parts in Q2,3,4&5 
a) parts are of four marks
these are facts based questions
mostly start from "What"
Answers of such questions require five "Ws".........what,why,where,when and who
what &why can be written in two sentences mentioning what happened and why did it happen?

Attempting four Marks Questions 

Where requires a place of event
when requires the year of event
who requires the name of the leader for that specific event
These answers may be written in one paragraph form or in bullets form too.
No introduction or background or detailing is required in it.
Students may get full marks in these answers by attempting correctly.

b ) Attempting seven Marks Questions 

These are known as reasoning questions as these start from "why"?
These are the "b" parts in Q 2,3,4,5 while its "c" part in Quesion 1
Students are expected to write three reasons and explain each reason too.
It is also advised to connect each paragraph to the question requirement at the end of each paragraph. 

C) Attempting fourteen Marks Questions 


It is the question based on reasoning and evaluation
Students are expected to write five reasons with explanations 
It is a better idea to write each reason and explanation in seperate paragraphs. Connectivity can be written at the end of each paragraph. 
Last paragraph of evalution is a must for 10 and 14 marks questions. It can be helpful to get good marks.  

Conclusion

Always attempt those quesions which you have very clearly learnt. Keep in mind if you know and attempt 10 , 14 and 7 marks questions better pick those quesions to attempt is more wise.
