Pakistan and UK Relations ( O Level Pakistan studies)

 Pakistan UK Relations

Q: How successful were Pakistan and UK relations during 1947 – 1999?

Ans: Pakistan started its life independently from 1947 but it had a constant threat that the British might take them back as the economy mismanagement of the Radcliffe Award had already caused the death of many Pakistanis on the borders between India and Pakistan; many Pakistanis felt that if they would have been treated fairly at the time of Partition, there would not be much need of British financial and technical assistance. In the starting years, Pakistan became a member of Commonwealth which provided financial education and technical support for Pakistan.

In 1950, Colombo Plan was announced by Commonwealth to provide aid of one million pounds to Pakistan to establish the Sui gas project. Canada also provided four lack million dollars to help under the flag of Commonwealth for the development of Pakistan Railways. Pakistan was constantly seeking for the support of Commonwealth members about the fair decision of Kashmir. Sometimes Commonwealth supported Kashmir, and on other times remained silent over the army rule of India over Kashmir. In 1956, Pakistan criticized the invasion of British over Suez Canal. Ultimately, Britain did not support Pakistan over 1965 war between India and Pakistan. Anyways in October 1965, the final agreement of the end of the war was signed at Commonwealth conference in London. Pakistan and Britain both joined SEATO and CENTO. These were the agreements against the attacks of communist states like Russia and China, but Pakistan did not get enough support during 1965 and 1971 wars. Ultimately, Pakistan left these agreements during Bhutto’s era.

British stayed silent over Bangladesh crisis which stained the relation further, and Pakistan left Commonwealth. In 1979, Pakistan and Britain became positive when Margaret Thatcher visited Pakistan for support and…Provided help also for Afghan refugees. An aid of 30 million pounds for the welfare of Afghan refugee has provided. During 1980's those relations further strengthened when almost 367 million pounds bilateral trade was started between two countries Pakistan rejoined  CW either in 1989. Pakistan also fried to take the support of CW members for the solution of Kashmir issue but no support was ever given with the view that Zia's era was the military region. Later on, during the Nawaz Sharif's era relations remained cold while Benazir's era these era successful foreign policy and Pakistan active member ship in common wealth. Pak and UK relations were at it's excellent paint during Benazir era in 1993-1996.

Afterwards during N.S 2nd era during 1997-1999, there were tense relations of Pak with UK, USA and  Japan during nuclear testing in Balochistan. In short it can be seen that relations between Pakistan and UK had been facing fluctuations depending upon the international situation in Pakistan.
