Pakistan and Bangladesh Relations ( O Level Pakistan studies)
Pakistan and Bangladesh relations from 1971-1999
Q. How successful were the relation between Pakistan and Bangladesh during 1947 to 1999.
Successes:
Bangladesh was a part of pakistan until december 1971. After creation of Bangladesh the prisoners of 1971 war were returned to Pakistan and trading also started with one another. In February 1974, however the primeminister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujeeb ur Rehman was invited to a meeting of the OIC ( Organization of Islamic Conference) in Lahore. This was a highly important in the realtions between the two countries. As for Bangladesh it was recognized for the first time officially. The two countries agreed to view each other as Muslim friends and try to resolve their differences. The 2 countries agreed to establish friendly relations. In 1975-76, both countries exchanged ambassadors and reached on agreement to co-operate on trade, tourism and media.
Communication link and air services were started in 1976. Both the countries agreed to relax visa requirement for the cause of travelling. By 1986, trade goods moving between the two countries had reached a value of $40 million. In 1985 and 1988 Bangladesh was hit by severe weather conditions that urgent aid was needed. On both occasions, Pakistan was the first country to provide aid. Bangladesh and Pakistan support each other on international forums. Bangladesh support Pakistan on kashmir issue. Both are the members of SAARC organization under which a number if decisions have been finalized for the promotion of trade , tourism and exchange of cultural programs. In May 1999, bangladesh adopted a very cautious approach when Pakistan and India tested nuclear explosions which stressed the need of resloving bilateral disputes through negotiatons.
Failures:
After the 1971 war and the creation of Bangladesh, relations between the two countries remained strained. Pakistan saw Bangladesh as a rebel nation, having broken away from the West Pakistan and winning independence largely as a result of support from Pakistan’s bitter rival India. During the civil war, there had been fierce fighting in East Pakistan which had left a legacy, distrust and anger between the two countries.
In the beginning, relations remained strained and Pakistan did not recognize Bangladesh for two years. When UK recognized Bangladesh in 1972, Pakistan withdrew from commonwealth and SEATO as there was distrust and anger simmering between the two countries. There was the problem of reallocating assets as there had been with India in 1974. Bangladesh claimed that it had right to the assets of West Pakistan. There was a problem of people in each country who want to settle in other not on huge scale of 1947 but large enough to be a problem. In1974 Bhutto visited Bangladesh. During the visit, the division of assets was discussed. Bangladesh asked for half of the assets which Pakistan had owned in 1971, but Bhutto rejected this as un-realistic. In 1975 Sheikh Mujeeb-ur- Rehman was killed along with his family in a military coup. In 1999 Pakistan tried to take non-Bengalis from Bangladesh but was rejected.click Here
Conclusively, the relations of Pakistan and Bangladesh remained partiy successful from 1971-1999.
