Reasons of Failure of War of Independence 1857

Q. Why did Indians remain unsuccessful in the War of Independence 1857?

A. The attempt to overthrow the EIC rule and expel them from India was unsuccessful due to many reasons. Indians were not well coordinated while British EIC army was well equipped and disciplined as well as well coordinated. There was no single aim to win the war and even no leader to keep everyone intact. In different groups fought for different reasons. India was too divided with no sense of patriotism.

The Punjab and Sindh were conquered by British officers. In result, when the sepoys rebelled against the British, Punjab at the time of war did not support Indians at all. Indian princes were interested only restoring their own feudal powers.

Muslims had only real unity force that was Islam. Muslims wanted to restore the Muslim government in the country. British took over the government and wanted to continue their rule. These reasons may explain well why the British always saw this as “Muslim Revolt”. All non-Muslim communities wanted their own rule. Indians were too divided that they were conspiring with British EIC against each other when they lost the war. Afterwards they blamed Muslims for everything.

Perhaps the major reason for the failure of the Indians was that the British were too strong. British troops were experienced and trained with modern methods of fighting. They were skilled diplomats too and they knew that most of the Indian rulers were fighting to restore their own rights but not to establish one united Indian government. They found it easy to play the various groups off against each other. Even if there were a number of uprisings against the British in different areas but being uncoordinated at different times nothing was successful.
